Residents as Volunteers

What Makes Scarsdale Special

The Scarsdale community is built from bricks and stones but fortified by residents who contribute their time, expertise and willingness to participate in community life as volunteers.  The excellent school system is what brings most people here, but the wonderful quality of life is what keeps residents here beyond the school experience of their children.

Residents as Volunteers

Elected town/village officials, mayor and trustees, responsible for policy making and overseeing all government business, are non-salaried volunteers who serve for limited terms.  The day-to-day conduct of business is the responsibility of paid professionals. These paid employees are in place without dependence upon or subject to turnover of elected officials.

Elected school board members, responsible for policy making and overseeing the school system, are non-salaried volunteers who serve for limited terms.  The day-to-day operation of the schools is the responsibility of paid professionals without dependence upon or subject to turnover of elected officials.

Numerous advisory committees and councils are comprised of resident volunteers appointed by the elected officials.

Local organizations support various interests in civic and cultural activities.  The League of Women Voters studies and addresses many community issues, both village and school related.

Service in the common good is the spirit of Scarsdale at its best.  It is this spirit that is celebrated each year by the Scarsdale Foundation through the awarding of the Scarsdale Bowl.  The Scarsdale Bowl is given to "one who has given unselfishly of time, energy and effort to the civic welfare of the community" and is recognized as one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a Scarsdale resident.
